Dark Chocolate can be good for you! It has some really great health properties such as lowering blood pressure, but before you all run out to start binging on chocolate to improve your health, understand that it contains calories and if you over eat it – then you’ll gain weight, which increases blood pressure. So moderation and balance is the key.
Nutrition of Dark Chocolate: 1 bar = 41 g (1.45 ounces)
- Energy: 218 calories
- Protein: 2.3 g
- Carbs: 24.4 g
- Fat: 13.3 g
Dark Chocolates Health Properties:
Antioxidants: Rich in flavanoids that protect the body from aging caused by free radicals which can cause damage that leads to heart disease. Dark chocolate contains a large number of antioxidants (nearly 8 times the number found in strawberries)
Lowers Blood Pressure: Plant (cocoa) phenols are a compound known to lower blood pressure.
Lowers Cholesterol: Dark chocolate has also been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) by up to 10%
I think that the key is balance. If you’d like to include chocolate in your diet – make sure it’s dark chocolate. Limit to 1-2 small squares in a portion size and remember to control all other meals and drinks to avoid weight gain.
