I cannot believe it’s taken me this long to try THUNDER RICE TEA! I love it…

What is it? It’s a selection of ingredients (vegetables and protein) that are finely chopped and served on top of either brown or white rice (of course I chose brown).  The ingredients are completely up to the chef but could include tofu, green beans, celery, okra, cabbage, spinach, chye sim, peanuts, pickled radish and ikan bilis (anchovies). It’s served with a side dish of green soup that is made from green tea, basil, mint, chinese parsley and coriander.  The best bit is – you tip the green soup into the bowl with the vegies and rice, mix it all up and “PRESTO” – you have a healthy, low fat, nutritious meal full of fibre and goodness that is really delicious.

Apparently as a Singaporean you sit on the fence with this dish – you either love it or you hate it.  What I loved about it:

  • Correct portion of rice (only a fist size portion)
  • Loaded with green leafy vegetables
  • Fresh ingredients
  • Rich in fibre
  • Rich in antioxidants
  • Little to no fat, nothing deep fried
  • The option to choose brown rice
  • Totally yummy

Nutrition information for 1 serving

  • Energy:  430 calories
  • Protein: 12 g
  • Carbs: 42 g
  • Fat: 10 g

My advice: Eat up!  This dish is great.  But remember: Eat slowly, put your utensils down between bites and stop eating when you feel 80% full because it’s better to waste it than to ‘waist’ it.  Enjoy

Interesting fact:  This dish is also called “Lei Cha” and originates from southern china where the local cuisine is known a ‘Hakka’.

    …with only 12g of protein..!!

    Good to have it once in a while…but not good enough to have it as a main meal… IMO

    Oh wow thank you for introducing me to this dish i ended up making my way to find a place to eat it and I LOVE IT!!!
    Its my new favourite thing! I am always craving it!
    I have a quetsion though regarding the 430 calories, is that including the whole portion of the rice?
    Because When I had it i took about half a cup (95g) of rice out.
    so would i be deducting the calories of 95g worth of rice?

    I had this dish at a restaurant (can’t remember the name) in San Francisco. So good.
    I’d like to try to make it. Stopping at 80% full is sometimes a trick with delicious dishes.

    But hahaha its actually called
    Grind Tea Rice, the original recipe is
    they used tea rather than vegetables which
    we use to cook the soup nowdays.
