Nutrition info: Tomato Sauce (Tomato Ketchup)
Posted on | June 25, 2012 | No Comments
The type of tomato sauce (ketchup) I’m referring to is the one you find in a bottle at the supermarket and you smother your fries with it.
During the manufacturing process, it is indeed made from tomatoes, however lots of sugar is added to improve the taste and extend the shelf life (not too mention other harmful additives such as artificial colours, flavours and preservatives).
Sauces are often the forgotten calories. We squirt on numerous condiments and fail to realize what they contain.

1 tablespoon of tomato sauce contains just under 1 teaspoon of sugar. That means roughly one-third of your portion you squirt on your food is sugar.
If you like to cook, you can make a much healthier home made recipe and leave out the sugar and harmful additives. Other than that, if you’re using tomato sauce to flavour your food try replacing it with mustard, vinegar, pepper or fresh herbs. As a last resort, if you really can’t switch, use half the portion that you used to.
