Outrigger Racing at Sentosa

Saturday was an awesome day of fun & sun. Took part in my 1st outrigger race at Sentosa. It was a bit of a last minute decision – but I’m so glad I did.
The first race was a 12 km race the length of the island, up and around a few buoys. We got off to a bad start as we got sandwiched inbetween the other Aussie boat and the rookies. The rookies should have moved over to give us some more room – but with currents & waves & rookie drivers – it ended up in a little bit of a crash. By the time we got untangled all of the boats were well ahead in front of us – and catching up is hard work.
Later in the afternoon we then did Mixed team race. I guess the best way to describe it was like a relay. One team went out for a 4km sprint round an island then back to shore, a short run up the beach to change teams and then back out again. We did 5 changes in total and that took us about 2.5 hours to complete.
It was a great day for Austcham Paddle Club. We did well taking home a few medals in the Mens team & Mixed A boat.
I’ve estimated that I use up approximately 500 calories per hour in a competition. So that means the full day of racing on Saturday used up about 860 calories. That certainly beats sitting around doing nothing.
