Obama has High Cholesterol – The Silent Killer
Posted on | March 2, 2010 | 2 Comments
Even the US president can’t hide from health problems – he’s recently found out in his annual check up that his LDL (bad) Cholesterol has crept up to high levels.
It’s been reported he will be saying “No, I won’t” to dessert and high-fat foods to reduce his LDL levels, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said on Monday.
“He would be also the first to tell you that he has probably had a few more cheeseburgers, and I think he would admittedly tell you he’s had more desserts in the last year than I’ve seen him eat prior to this,” Gibbs said in answer to a reporter’s question about the president’s high LDL cholesterol. But the question is – will he succeed?
What is Cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a soft, waxy substance found among the lipids (fats) in the bloodstream and in all your body’s cells that unfortunately can never dissolve. It is transported to and from the cells by special carriers called lipoproteins: Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and High-density lipoprotein (HDL). The biggest concern is the gradual build-up of plaque and cholesterol that can increase stroke risk by increasing your risk for heart disease. Worst of all – there are no symptoms for high cholesterol buying antibiotics online – it’s know as the Silent Killer. The only way you discover if your cholesterol is out of normal ranges is to have a blood test.
How to lower cholesterol:
- Cut down on foods high in saturated fat and cholesterol. I.e. fatty meats, red meat, butter, cheese, whole-milk dairy products, egg yolks, shellfish, organ meats, deep fried & processed foods.
- Increase unsaturated (healthy fat) such as fish, olive oil, flaxseed, walnuts.
- Do cardiovascular exercise at least 30 minutes per day
- Eat more Fibre: Fibre binds to cholesterol, so when fibre exits the body, it takes cholesterol with it. Try sprinking fibre such as psyllium husk onto food and eat more oatmeal, fruit (with skin), vegetables (especially green ones)
- Swap bread and low GI carbs to whole grains
- Try taking Supplements: Omega-3 helps lower cholesterol / Vitamin B, Chromium and Garlic also help
- Importantly, lose weight if you need to
My answer is YES! If US President Obama does cut down on his recent increase in eating saturated fat foods he will be on the right track to improve his cholesterol. And addressing his ‘diet’ first is the key!

It is great that Obama’s health screening result is being talked about. After all this is the same guy who was photographed with a six pack..
Goes to clearly convey to ppl that looks are deceiving. Most of the people I have seen undergoing bypass surgeries are those who look “skinny” oblivious to the fact that cholestrol is building up in their arteries!!
Good Article!

I completely agree! Just because you look ‘skinny’ doesn’t mean you’re healthy. We should be promoting “Ideal Weight” – which means Ideal Shape (BMI, Waist-to-Hip Ratio); Ideal Composition (Body Fat %, Hydration, Muscle Mass, Visceral Fat); Ideal Function (Cholesterol, Blood Glucose, Blood Pressure). If you’re within normal range for each of those only then should you consider yourself healthy.
