Penang: The Verdict

Posted on | December 3, 2009 | No Comments

Well  I survived the weekend in Penang.  At the last minute I was assigned a friends parents as tour guides to give me the inside knowledge of the island.

I saw Fort Cornwallis, Clock Tower, Ferringhi Beach, Eastern & Oriental Hotel, Batik Factory, Gurney Plaza, Gurney Drive, Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (aka Blue Mansion), Khoo Kongsi House, Chulia Street and many local hawker stands.

Nonya Food

The food as expected was amazing.  I tasted the BEST Assam Laksa I’ve ever had in my life.

I followed my own advice & shared all meals so my portion sizes weren’t too big, I had little to no rice with my meals, chose vegetables whenever possible, I didn’t have any alcohol & I walked as much as I could.  It certainly makes a difference.

I did do a very Singaporean thing I’m still laughing at.  On my excursion to Chulia Street I walked past a street lined with people all slurping out of bowls and hawker stalls with a line of 20+ people waiting to buy whatever was in that bowl.  So I thought to myself whatever it was must be good – so I joined the queue.  Ordered what the person in front did – and ended up with this:

Ais kacang (Ice Kachang Dessert)

Ais kacang (Ice Kachang Dessert)

‘This’ is ais kacang (ice kachang) … at first I thought it was just going to be a snow cone – but then got very worried when they put red beans, corn kernels, funny coloured jelly things (which I still have no idea what they were), peanuts and condensed milk. Oh well, you only live once –  Anyhow – the end result was FANTASTIC – It was totally worth the wait.

All in all, it was a fantastic weekend.  It is possible to go on holiday and not completely blow your health regime.  It just takes a little bit of determination and know how.
