Sucralose – The Knight in Shiny Sweetener Armour

Posted on | July 29, 2010 | 1 Comment

Sucralose is a zero-calorie artificial sweetener (aka Splenda), is also known under the E number (additive code) E955 and is approximately 600 times as sweet as sucrose (table sugar).  It plays an important role in weight loss products, to reduce calories in sweet food and beverages and also helps people with diabetes with their glucose intake.

Sucralose was discovered in 1976 by scientists from Tate & Lyle.  On a late-summer day, one of the scientists was told to ‘test’ the powder – they thought they had been asked to ‘taste’ it, so he did. He found the compound to be exceptionally sweet, as sucralose is 600 times as sweet as sucrose.

Sucralose is manufactured by chlorinating sugar. This process includes changing the structure of the sugar molecule by replacing three select hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sugar molecule with three chlorine atoms

Is Sucralose Safe?

In determining the safety of Sucralose, FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) re-examined over 110 studies done on humans and animals including rats, mice, beagle dogs and monkeys. The objective of the research was to ensure that there won’t be any risk of cancer, reproductive and neurological effect cause by Sucralose, and it will be safe for human consumption. Studies include single dose administration to eating trials  over two years. No adverse reactions were observed at intakes up to 16,000 mg/kg/day in mice or 10,000 mg/kg/day in rats—a dosage equivalent to 455kg of sucrose administered in a single day to a 75kg adult

Leading medical, scientific and regulatory authorities around the world have approved Sucralose for human consumption. They include:

  • The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
  • The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)
  • Health Canada
  • Food Standards Australia/New Zealand
  • Japanese Food Sanitation Council
  • The Joint (Food and Agriculture Organization/World Health Organization) Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA)

Benefits of Sucralose

  • Very heat stable and hence can be used in cooking or baking
  • Suitable for diabetes, breastfeeding women and children

Today, Sucralose is found in more than 4500 products in over 80 countries.  It can be found in tabletop sweeteners, a variety of baked goods, dairy products, breakfast cereal, carbonated soft drinks and specialty products.
