Nutrition Info: Calories in Hummus

Posted on | July 24, 2011 | No Comments

I just made best homemade Hummus! Better than anything you can buy in the store for sure. So cheap & easy – and because I made it myself, I can make it as healthy as I want.

I highly recommend that if you are looking for a healthier dip or spread to snack on, choose hummus. Make it yourself by following this recipe that I use:

Healthy Hummus

Healthy Hummus

Hummus Recipe:

  • 1 can (400g) chickpeas, drained*  (288 calories; 17.2g protein, 23.3g carbs, 5.2g fat)
  • 2 cloves crushed garlic
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons tahini paste (178 calories; 5.1g protein, 6.36g carbs, 16.12g fat)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (119 calories; 0g protein, 0g carbs, 13.5g fat)
  • Pinch of salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon praprika

*save the drained juice in a glass to use if you need to make the hummus wetter to blend.

Put all of the ingredients in a blender and mix really well.  If the mixture needs more moisture to blend well, use the reserved chickpea can juice.

Note: This makes a really large portion.  I would divide this over 4 – 5 days easily which brings it to only about 120 calories per serve.  Eat with some celery and you have the perfect, healthy snack.

Hint: To make this contain less fat, use less oil and tahini and instead use the juice from the can to blend.

Enjoy!
