Durian – The King Of Fruit

Posted on | November 6, 2009 | No Comments

For anyone that has ever smelt durian before you know all too well that it is eye-watering memorable.  And not in a good way.  For anyone that has never had the pleasure, I’m not sure it’s possible to describe the pungent smell accurately.  But trust me, when you are within 50 metres of it you’ll be thinking to yourself “what the heck is that smell”.   From the Singaporeans I’ve spoken to they either love it or they hate it. There is no grey area there.

Smell aside, it’s not known as the king of fruit for nothing.  It is a weight-watchers nightmare.  The creamy flesh inside this spiky hard covered fruit is loaded with calories.

Durian

Serving Size:  1 cup

Calories:  360 calories

Protein:  0 g

Carbs:  39 g

Fat:  6 g

1 medium size fruit contains about 650 calories (equivalent to a whole plate of chicken rice).  It’s also one of the only fruits that contains a substantial amount of fat.

So advice from the health guru:  Leave eating durians for special, special occasions. This shouldn’t be a fruit eaten daily – Even if it’s free-lah.
