Is Kopi C Kosong really healthier?

buying online drugs alt=”Kopi Barista” width=”150″ height=”150″ />The local singaporean coffee (aka kopi) is delicious! The brewed coffee is thick, strong and syrupy and is quite a sight watching the ‘baristas’ pour the brew between metal containers with a long spout without spilling a drop.
Initially I got a bit nervous on my first solo mission to purchase a kopi as it’s slightly confusing to place your order and know what you’re getting….. all the O’s the C’s can get very intimidating…. you’ll understand very soon 🙂
If you haven’t ever tried coffee with condensed milk and sugar…. I can only describe it as ‘wow’….. it gives you the biggest sugar and caffeine rush and naturally…. too much of a good thing isn’t healthy for you. The normal kopi is loaded with sugar and calories and when watching your health & weight should be drunk in moderation.
Kopi: Coffee with condensed milk —- 113 Calories
Kopi O: Black Coffee with sugar (no milk) —- 35 Calories
Kopi C: Coffee with evaporated milk and sugar —- 90 Calories
Kopi-gau: Coffee (“gau” means strong brew in Hokkien)
Kopi-po: Coffee (“po” means weak brew in Hokkien)
Kopi-C-kosong: Coffee with evaporated milk and no sugar (‘kosong’ means empty in Malay) — 60 Calories
Kopi-O-kosong: Black coffee without sugar or milk —- 5 Calories
Kopi-O-kosong-gau: A strong brew of coffee without sugaor or milk —- 5 Calories
Kopi-bing or Kopi-ice or Kopi-Peng: Coffee with milk, sugar and ice —- 113 Calories
Kopi-xiu-dai: Coffee with less sugar
Kopi-gah-dai: Coffee with extra sweetened milk
Kopi-Di-Lo: All Coffee, no water
One of the biggest novelties is that you can have your kopi served in a plastic bag! (Hot or cold) Extra handy for taxi drivers who can hang the bag off their indicator!
So to finally answer the question. Is Kopi C Kosong really healthier? (Coffee with evaporated milk and no sugar) The confusing answer is YES but NO !! Of course anytime you can remove sugar from your diet it’s better for blood sugar control and consuming less calories helps with weight management.
However, did you know that full cream evaporated milk contains as much fat & saturated fat as condensed milk!
Evaporated Milk = 8.7 g Fat in 100ml
Condensed Milk = 10.2 g Fat in 100ml
Why? Because Evaporated milk is mainly made from palm oil that contains alot of saturated fat. Saturated fat can increase bad cholesterol (LDL) increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
The solution: Limit Kopi C Kosong to only 3 times per week, if possible use low fat evaporated milk or swap Kopi C Kosong with Kopi-O Kosong.
