Bandung

Have you ever tried bandung? Not to be confused with the city in Indonesia called Bandung – I’m referring to the popular floral drink called Bandung?  Also known as ‘sirap bandung’ or ‘air bandung’ – it’s hard the miss the bright pink coloured drink.

The popularity of this drink throughout Malaysia and Singapore started during British colonial days where it is rumoured that drink vendors added pink colouring to enable people to tell the difference between it and another popular drink teh tarik.  The popularity continues to grow as now Bandung has been canned for convenience and variations such as grass jelly and tapioca pearls have been added.

Bandung consists of rose syrup (or cordial) that is mixed with milk.  The result is an opaque pink liquid that is served on ice.  When I went researching the nutrition information for this drink, I found there were many different recipes.  Some made their own rose syrup from scratch, others used creaming soda soft drink that was either mixed with plain milk, evaporated milk and /or condensed milk to sweeten.

Nutrition information for Bandung:

  • Energy: 153 Calories (250ml)
  • Protein: 1.1g
  • Carbs: 32g
  • Fat: 2g

As with all drinks that contain sugar you can expect lots of calories.  As well as sugar, this also contains high amounts of fat from the milk. Nutritionally, 2 tablespoons of condensed milk has 130 calories, 22g sugar and high amounts of saturated fat. Evaporated Milk contains 8.7 g Fat in 100ml and Condensed Milk has 10.2 g Fat in 100ml.  Why?  Because Evaporated milk is mainly made from palm oil that contains alot of saturated fat.  Saturated fat can increase bad cholesterol (LDL) increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Here is a healthy, low calorie version:

  • 1 x sachet of Xndo MCT Sweet Green Coconut
  • 250ml water
  • 1 x tablespoon rose syrup
  • Mix all of the above with ice and enjoy!  Contains only 30 calories!
