Xia Long Bao (dumplings)

Xia Long Bao (dumplings)

Yesterday my colleague was talking about the Winter Solstice celebration and her family tradition to come together to eat Tang Yuan (glutinous rice balls) and dumplings made by her mother.  This story sharing turned into hours of talk about dumplings – because I absolutely love dumplings.  And I’m sorry to say but you haven’t lived until you’ve eaten a good dumpling.

Our favourites: Din Tai Fung, Crystal Jade, The Eastern Restaurant (now closed) and my colleagues secret Chinatown spot that has 10 dumplings for $5.

Because the dumplings are steamed and not fried, they are somewhat on the ‘healthier’ side.  But that of course depends on how many you eat.

Calories in Xiao Long Bao (1 dumpling)

  • Energy: 85 calories per piece
  • Protein: 3g
  • Carbs: 6g
  • Fat: 5g

Remember that your daily intake of fat is recommended to be below 30g.  If one dumpling has 5g of fat, it’s best to keep your intake below 5 per meal.

I would recommend trying not to overload on dumplings and complete your meal with steamed rice and a vegetable dish.

Xia Long Bao are really not to bad on the naughty food scales – but like I keep stressing – it depends on how many you eat (and how often).  But all in all, they’re quite ok every now and then.

My Health Guru Advice:   Eat Slowly, Put your eating utensils down between bites and stop eating when you feel around80% full as it’s better to waste it than to ‘waist’ it.  Enjoy!!
