Nutrition Info: Chickpeas
Posted on | May 5, 2012 | No Comments
Chickpeas are part of the legume family and are also known as ceci bean, garbanzo bean, chana, sanagalu, Indian pea and grams.
These are a particularly valuable food as they are higher in protein without containing any animal protein. For this reason, they are highly regarded by vegetarians. They are also very versatile and can be added to curries, soups, salads, blended to make spreads and even dried to be eaten as a healthy snack.
Chickpeas are also a good source of zinc, folate, dietary fibre and low in fat. Studies have also suggested that due to balance of fibre, protein and carbohydrate, they have a cholesterol lowering ability and are beneficial for diabetics.
Nutrition information in Chickpeas: 1 cup (164 g)
- Energy: 269 calories
- Protein: 15 g
- Carbs: 45 g
- Fat: 4 g
Do remember though, they still contain energy (calories!!)
The correct portion to eat should be ½ cup portion (size of a fist). If you are vegetarian, then a slightly bigger portion needs to be eaten of course. Overall, these are a very nutritious food to eat.
Rememember: Eat slowly, put your utensils down between bites and stop eating when you feel 80% full because it’s better to waste it than to “waist” it. Enjoy!
