Stretch: The Pretzel (a.k.a Glute Stretch)
Posted on | April 10, 2011 | No Comments
I think all of us are probably guilty of not being flexible enough – or if you’re active, not stretching after exercise enough.
So here’s the stretch of the week to practice! It’s easy, simple and feels great. It has a nickname as the “Pretzel Stretch” because that’s what you end up looking like – but the correct term for it is the Lying Gluteal Stretch (i.e. your butt muscle)
How to do it:
-
Lie on your back with knees bent and feet on floor
- Cross one ankle onto the other knee (you will have one knee out to the side in the air)
- With your hands reach down to the knee/leg that is bent with foot of the floor (not the leg that is crossed)
- Pull that leg towards your chest until you feel a comfortable stretch
- Hold the stretch for a least 20 – 30 seconds
- Repeat on the other side, and you can do more than one if you like!
Note: If you can’t reach your leg with your hands use a towel
Muscle(s) Stretched:
Gluteus Maximum a.k.a The biggest muscle in your butt
Remember, flexibility is one of the core components of health. Unfortunately we do get stiffer as we get older so it’s really important we dedicate time in our lives to stretch.
Enjoy!
